Select and and understand what compatible weighing and scanning kit is best for your farming system
If you're not sure where to start with selecting kit, this guide can help you understand which equipment is best for your system.
Work out what equipment do you need?
To get started weighing and/or scanning on any system, we recommend four main bits of kit:
- Weigh Head
- Weigh Bars
- EID reader (if using Electronic ID tags)
- Compatible handheld device i.e. phone or tablet
Overall, we recommend: Tru-Test S3
All of the weigh heads we link with are great in the own right, but by far the easiest to use is the Tru-Test S3. It links to both Apple and Android devices with ease.
Note: head to the bottom of this page to see a table of other compatible weigh heads
Weigh bars
Choosing the correct weigh bars for your system depends upon:
a. What is the approximate weight of animals to be weighed?
b. How heavy is your crush?
c. What is the width of your crush or race?
Use this table to identify and select the correct weigh bars for your system:
Installation
Most weigh bars come with bolt down kits. Either bolt them onto the crush or you may need to create a bracket
Note: If you don't want to use a crush to weigh your cattle, you can buy an aluminium platform to put in a race
EID reader (if using Electronic ID tags)
EID Stick Readers are suitable, for a few hundred cattle. You can wave the stick reader near their ear and it picks up the EID tag and sends to the Breedr app via Bluetooth.
We recommend: Tru-Test SRS2/SRS2i
Note: head to the bottom of this page to see a table of other compatible EID stick readers
EID Panel Readers are considered more suitable for a much larger number of cattle. You attach it to the crush and as animals stand near it, it picks up the EID tag and sends the number to the Breedr app via Bluetooth. This allows you to weigh completely hands-free!
We recommend: Tru-Test XRP2/XRP2i
Compatible handheld device i.e. phone or tablet
The equipment we have suggested in this guide is compatible with both Android and iOS (Apple) devices. However, other hardware are available via the Breedr shop.
Phone: we recommend higher end devices with a decent amount of RAM (memory):
- Android 12 + newer
- iOS 11 + newer
Tablet: we recommend the Galaxy Tab A9/A9+ with the 128/8GB which costs around £169 (Jan '25) as the best all-rounder in terms of compatibility to a wide range of equipment
Note: Breedr may still work with other models, but we cannot guarantee optimal app performance and behaviour
If you already have, or intend to buy, other weighing equipment, you can check compatibility with Breedr using this table:
*Download the agrilink program from allflex and change the Bluetooth profile to IAP
