How to Import Neogen DNA Test Results
Using Neogen to get genomic test results? You can ingest that data directly into Breedr.
Import your Neogen genomic test results into Breedr to attach DNA data directly to each animal's record. Once imported, results are stored against the animal's profile and available for reporting and selection decisions.
Before you start: You'll need your completed Neogen results file downloaded from the Neogen portal. If you haven't received your results yet, or aren't sure which file to download, start at Step 1 below.
What is Neogen GeneSeek Testing?
Neogen (GeneSeek) is one of the primary DNA testing labs used by US beef producers. Tests are ordered through the Neogen portal at genomics.neogen.com and samples are collected using a Tissue Sampling Unit (TSU), a small punch tag applicator that collects a tissue sample at the time of tagging.
Common Neogen tests used with Breedr include:
|
Test |
What it Provides: |
|
Igenity Beef |
Genomic EPDs for commercial cattle: calving ease, growth, carcass, fertility, and feed efficiency traits |
|
EPD Results |
Breed association EPD data returned from Neogen testing, enhances accuracy of registered animals' genetic evaluations |
|
Breedseek |
Breed composition analysis, identifies primary and secondary breed percentages from a DNA sample |
|
Igenity BeefxDairy |
Genomic profile for beef-on-dairy crosses: carcass, growth, and feed efficiency traits optimised for beef-on-dairy programs |
Not sure which test your cattle had? Check your Neogen order confirmation email, or log in at genomics.neogen.com and review your completed orders, the test type is listed on each order.
TSU barcodes and Breedr: If you use TSU tags, you can scan the TSU barcode directly into Breedr during a chute session using the Quick Actions > Scan TSU Barcode feature or the Socket Mobile D740 / Allflex APR650 scanner. This links the TSU barcode to the animal record in Breedr, making it easier to match results when the file comes back from Neogen. See Quick Actions in Chute Mode for how to scan TSU barcodes during a session.
Step 1: Download your results from the Neogen portal
- Log in at genomics.neogen.com.
- Navigate to your completed orders or results section.
- Find the order for your cattle and click to open it.
- Download the results file. Neogen provides results as a CSV file. Download the version that includes all trait columns, not a summary-only format.
First time logging in to Neogen? Your login is set up when you place your first order. If you need help accessing your results, contact Neogen customer support at 1-800-234-5784 or visit neogen.com/en/usac/support.
Step 2: Prepare your results file for import
Before uploading to Breedr, check that your Neogen results file includes a column that matches how your animals are identified in Breedr, either TSU Barcode, EID, or Visual ID.
Breedr uses this ID column to match each row in your results file to the correct animal record. If the IDs in the results file don't match what's in Breedr, the import will either fail or attach results to the wrong animal.
Common ID matching scenarios:
|
Neogen ID in results file |
Matching ID in Breedr |
What to do |
|
TSU Barcode |
TSU Barcode already scanned in Breedr |
Ready to import — IDs will match automatically |
|
TSU Barcode |
Not yet in Breedr |
Add TSU barcodes to animal records first via Edit Animal Information or file upload |
|
EID |
EID in Breedr |
Ready to import — confirm EID format matches (no extra spaces) |
|
Lab reference number |
No match in Breedr |
Contact our Customer Success team — manual matching may be needed |
EID format check: If your EIDs have a space in the middle (e.g. 840 1234567891011 instead of 8401234567891011), your EID reader may have been set to the wrong format. See Recommended Settings for Equipment to fix this for future sessions, then correct the EIDs in your results file before importing.
Step 3: Import the results into Breedr web browser
- Go to Import Data from the left-hand navigation.
- Select "Partner Imports."

- Select the test you want to import (EPD Results which is the generic uploader for most results , Breedseek, Igenity BeefxDairy, Igenity Beef).

- Select your CSV file and click "Next."

- Match the columns, Breedr will attempt to auto-match Neogen column headings. Review the matches and correct any that didn't map automatically.
- Confirm the animal ID column is mapped so Breedr knows which animal each row belongs to.
Click "Finish Upload."- A green screen confirms the import was successful.
Step 4: Verify the Results on an Animal Record
After the import:
- Open My Cattle and tap any animal that was included in the import.
- Open the animal's record and under the "Genealogy" button, find “Genetics”.
- Confirm the results appear correctly
If your Import has Errors:
Click "Download un-imported animals" to save a CSV of the rows that failed. Check the error column for the cause.
|
Error |
Likely cause |
Fix |
|
Animal not found |
TSU Barcode or EID in the results file doesn't match any record in Breedr |
Add the TSU barcode to the animal record first, or check for typos and extra spaces in the ID column |
|
Duplicate match |
Multiple animals in Breedr share the same ID |
Resolve duplicate IDs in your account before re-importing |
|
Invalid column format |
Results file column headers don't match what the importer expects |
Download the Breedr Neogen import template (see below) and reformat your file to match |
|
Missing required column |
ID column not present or not mapped |
Ensure at least one animal ID column (TSU Barcode or EID) is included and mapped |
