Quick Ingest in Chute Mode

Need to add a group of animals quickly with the same required values? Contact us to access Quick Ingest through Chute Mode.

Quick Ingest lets you add a large group of animals to Breedr rapidly by setting shared default values once and scanning each animal's EID tag to create individual records. Every animal gets the same defaults, breed, date of birth, date on ranch, source, group, location, and each one gets its own unique ID from the scan.

It is the fastest way to get a fresh load of cattle into Breedr at the chute. A typical use case: you just bought 60 calves at the sale barn. They are the same breed, same approximate age, and they all arrived today. Quick Ingest gets them all into your account in a single pass down the alley without stopping to fill in a form for each one.

When to use Quick Ingest:

Quick Ingest is the right tool when:

  • You are adding a group of animals that share the same breed, approximate date of birth, date on ranch, and source
  • You have EID tags on all animals and a connected EID reader
  • You want to get animals into Breedr quickly at the chute without stopping at a computer

Use a different method if:

Before you Start:

  • Connect your EID reader. Quick Ingest relies on scanning EID tags to create each animal record. See Issues Connecting Your Breedr App to Your Equipment? if your reader is not connecting.
  • Prepare your default values. Know the breed, approximate date of birth, date on ranch, source ranch name, and which group or location you want to assign before you start. You set these once as defaults at the beginning of the session.
  • Create your group or location first if you want to assign animals to one during ingest. Groups and locations must already exist in Breedr before you can select them. See Create, Edit and Delete a Group and Create, Edit and Delete a Location.

How to use Quick Ingest:

Step 1: Open Quick Ingest

  1. Tap "Sessions" from the bottom navigation bar.
  2. Tap "Chute Setup"
  3. Scroll and tap "Create Animals"

Step 2: Set Your Default Values

This is the template that applies to every animal you scan in this session. Fill in the fields that are the same across the whole group. These can be edited on an individual basis if necessary.

Mixed sex load? If you bought steers and heifers in the same load, run two separate Quick Ingest sessions, one for steers, one for heifers, so the sex default is correct for each group.

Step 3: Scan Each Animal's ID Tag

Animal already exists in Breedr? If the scanned EID matches an animal already in your account, Breedr will pull up the existing record rather than creating a new record. Review the record and make any note or tag to come back to that animal before continuing -- it may indicate the animal was already added by a previous import or session.

Step 4: Review and Finish

  1. When all animals are scanned, tap "Save & Finish" to close the session.
  2. A summary screen shows the total number of animals created and any flags (duplicates or errors) to review.
  3. Tap "View Animals" to see the new records in My Cattle and confirm everything looks correct.

Editing Records After Session:

Quick Ingest creates records quickly using shared defaults. You can update individual records after the session to add or correct information, for example, if some animals have different birth dates, or if you want to add anything missing.

To update individual records: Use Edit Animal Information on the app for one-at-a-time changes.

To update multiple records at once: Use the Edit Animals file import on the browser portal. Export your newly created animals, fill in the correct values, and re-upload.
