Updating TruTest Firmware

Keeping your TruTest EID reader and weigh head firmware up to date improves Bluetooth reliability, fixes known connection issues, and ensures compatibility with the latest version of Breedr.

Devices Covered:

This article covers firmware updates for all TruTest devices compatible with Breedr:

EID Readers: SRS2i, SRS2, XRS2i, XRS2, XRS, XRP2i, XRP2

Weigh Heads: S3, EziWeigh 7i

How to Check Your Current Firmware Version:

On EID stick readers (SRS2i, SRS2, XRS2i, XRS2, XRS):

  1. Power on the reader.
  2. Navigate to Settings > General.
  3. The current firmware version is displayed on screen.

Recommended minimum version for SRS2i/XRS2i: Version 1.4.7.0 or above. If your reader is below this, update before your next session.

On weigh heads (S3, EziWeigh 7i):

The firmware version is visible on the device display or in the Data Link app after connecting.

Method 1: Update using the TruTest Data Link mobile app (iPhone, iPad, Android)

The Data Link mobile app is the easiest update method for most ranchers. It connects to the reader via Bluetooth and handles the update wirelessly, no computer or USB cable needed.

Supported devices via mobile app: SRS2i, XRS2i, S3, EziWeigh 7i

The SRS2 and XRS2 (Classic Bluetooth models) are not updated via the mobile app. Use Data Link PC for those models.

  1. Download the TruTest Data Link app from the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or Google Play (Android) if you have not already. Search "TruTest Data Link" or download at livestock.tru-test.com.
  2. Power on the TruTest device you want to update.
  3. Open the Data Link app and connect to your device from the device list.
  4. Once connected, tap the device name in the app.
  5. Tap "Check for updates" or navigate to Tools > Updates > Check for updates.
  6. If an update is available, the app will display the new version number and prompt you to download and install.
  7. Tap "Update" and keep the app open and the device powered on until the update completes. Do not close the app or let your phone screen lock during the update.
  8. The device restarts automatically when the update is complete.

Keep the device close during the update. Stay within 3 feet of the reader throughout the firmware update to maintain a stable Bluetooth connection. A dropped connection mid-update can corrupt the firmware, if this happens, contact TruTest support or our Customer Success team.

Method 2: Update using Data Link PC software (Windows only)

Use Data Link PC for any device that cannot be updated via the mobile app, including the SRS2, XRS2, XRS, XRP2, and EziWeigh 7i if you prefer a wired connection.

Supported devices via PC: SRS2i, SRS2, XRS2i, XRS2, XRS, XRP2i, XRP2, S3, EziWeigh 7i

What you need:

  • A Windows PC (Windows 7, 8.1, 10, or 11)
  • The TruTest USB cable that came with your device
  • Data Link PC software installed

Step 1: Download and install Data Link PC:

  1. Go to livestock.tru-test.com and navigate to Software and Apps > Data Link PC Software.
  2. Download the latest version and run the installer.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts to install.

Already have Data Link PC installed? Check that it is up to date first, an outdated version of Data Link may not support newer firmware files. Open Data Link, click Tools > Updates > Check for updates and install any Data Link software update before updating your device firmware.

Step 2: Connect Your Device

  1. Power on the TruTest device.
  2. Connect it to your PC using the USB cable. A USB-to-serial driver installs automatically the first time, allow a minute for Windows to complete the installation.
  3. Open Data Link PC software. The device name appears in the bottom left corner of the screen once connected.

Step 3: Check for and Install the Firmware Update

  1. In Data Link, click Tools in the top menu bar.
  2. Click Updates.
  3. Click "Check for updates."
  4. Data Link checks for updates to both the software itself and any connected device firmware.
  5. If a firmware update is available for your device, follow the on-screen prompts to download and install it.
  6. Keep the device connected and powered on until the update completes. Do not unplug the cable mid-update.

After Updating

After any firmware update:

  1. Re-confirm your reader settings (tag format, Bluetooth mode), a firmware update can sometimes reset settings to factory defaults. See Recommended Settings for Equipment.
  2. Test the connection in Breedr using the Device Tester Screen before your next session. See Device Tester Screen.
