Why are my Visual IDs sorting incorrectly?

If your Visual IDs are not sorting in the order you expect, it's because they are being treated as text rather than numbers.

For example, a text-based sort will display IDs like this:

  • 1
  • 10
  • 100
  • 111
  • 2
  • 20

This happens because the system compares each character from left to right instead of evaluating the value as a number.

How to Sort Visual IDs Correctly:

To keep your Visual IDs in numerical order, use leading zeros so that every ID has the same number of digits.

For example:

  • 01
  • 02
  • 03
  • ...
  • 010
  • 011
  • 100

With consistent formatting, your Visual IDs will sort in the expected numerical order.

Best Practice:

When assigning Visual IDs, decide on a consistent number of digits based on the size of your herd. For example:

Herd Size Recommended Format Example
Up to 999 animals 2 digits 001, 025, 342
Up to 9,999 animals 3 digits 0001, 0250, 3421
Larger herds 4 or more digits 00001, 01250, 23421

Using a consistent format from the beginning helps maintain accurate sorting throughout the lifetime of your records.
