Log Estrus and AI

Record observed heat events and artificial insemination in Breedr to build a complete breeding history for each cow or heifer. Logging estrus and AI dates ties your pregnancy check results and calving records to a specific breeding event, which feeds your Birth Forecast report and Breeding History report with accurate expected calving dates.

Use this when you observe a cow or heifer in standing heat and want to record the date and set a follow-up reminder.

On the app:

  1. Find the animal in My Cattle and tap her record.
  2. Tap the yellow "+ Manage" button.
  3. Tap "Log activity."
  4. Select "Breeding" then "Log Estrus."
  5. Fill in the available fields:
  6. Tap "Save."

Set an alert. After logging estrus, consider setting a 21-day alert on the animal to watch for a return to heat (if she was not bred) or a 20-day alert to recheck her status after AI. See Create an Alert - Mobile.

Log an AI (Artificial Insemination)

Use this when a cow or heifer has been inseminated. Recording the AI date and sire gives Breedr the information it needs to calculate an expected calving date and populate your Birth Forecast report.

On the app:

  1. Find the animal in My Cattle and tap her record.
  2. Tap the yellow "+ Manage" button.
  3. Tap "Log activity."
  4. Select "Breeding" then "AI."
  5. Fill in the available fields:
  6. Tap "Save."

Sire must be in your Breeding Stock list first. If you are using a new AI sire, add him as off-ranch genetics before logging the AI activity. See Add a Sire.

Log AI to Multiple Animals at Once:

If you AI'd a group of cows on the same day with the same sire, log the activity to all of them at once rather than one by one.

From a chute session:

  1. Run your cows through a Quick Weigh or Quick Scan session.
  2. After saving the session, open it from Finished Sessions.
  3. Select all the animals that were bred on that date.
  4. Tap "Manage" > "Log activity" > "Breeding" > "AI."
  5. Enter the AI date and sire -- these apply to all selected animals.
  6. Tap "Save."

From My Cattle:

  1. Go to My Cattle and filter by the Group or Location containing the cows that were AI'd.
  2. Select all animals (tap "Select all" or individual animals).
  3. Tap "Manage" > "Log activity" > "Breeding" > "AI."
  4. Enter the details and tap "Save."
