Recording Performance Activities

Performance data is the foundation of every management decision you make at the ranch - which animals to keep, which to sell, which sires are producing the best progeny, and where your herd sits relative to its potential.

This article covers:

  • Live Weight
  • Carcass Grade
  • Body Condition Score
  • Colostrum Total Protein

How to Log a Performance Activity:

All perfromance activities follow the same path.

On the app:

  1. Find the animal in My Cattle and tap its record.
  2. Tap "+ Manage" then "Log Activity."
  3. Select "Performance" from the activity categories.
  4. Select the specific test.
  5. Enter the result and relevant details.
  6. Tap "Save."

During a chute session: Log test results via "+ Manage" > "Log activity" > "Performance" after scanning each animal. See Activities in Chute Mode.

By file import on the browser portal: Use the Performance importer to upload weights for multiple animals at once.

  1. Log in at app.breedr.tech.
  2. Go to Import Data > Custom Import > Performance.
  3. Select your CSV file.
  4. Map the columns -- include an animal ID column and a weight column with the date.
  5. Click "Finish Upload."

Weight units: Breedr records weights in the unit set in your account preferences. US accounts default to pounds (lbs). See General Settings if your unit display looks incorrect.

Live Weight:

What it is: Live weight is the recorded body weight of a live animal at a specific date. Every weight you capture in Breedr, whether from a connected weigh head in Chute Mode, a manual entry, or a file import, creates a weight record on that animal's timeline.

Carcass Grade

What it is: Carcass grade records the USDA quality grade and yield grade of an animal after slaughter, along with additional carcass measurements. Recording carcass data in Breedr links kill results back to individual animal records, which is the foundation of the Sire and Dam Performance report and any retained ownership or carcass merit marketing program you participate in.

Carcass Data is only be logged as the date you performed the activity on the animal in the app, to upload a full scope of the data, see Carcass Data Importing via CSV to upload your Carcass Data to Breedr.

Body Condition Score (BCS)

What it is: Body Condition Score is a numeric assessment of a cow's fat reserves and overall nutritional status, scored on a 1 to 9 scale. A score of 1 is severely emaciated; 9 is obese. The target for a beef cow at calving is 5 to 6.

Colostrum Total Protein

What it is: Colostrum Total Protein is a measure of the quality of a freshly calved cow's first milk, recorded as a percentage using a Brix refractometer. Brix percentage is a proxy for immunoglobulin (IgG) concentration, the antibodies that give a newborn calf its initial passive immunity.
